IWA CELEBRATES PROFESSOR NIYI OSUNDARE AT 77


 

The International Writers Association (IWA) has congratulated renowned Nigerian scholar, poet, and playwright, Professor Niyi Osundare on the occasion of his 77th birthday.

In a statement released by the Association's Acting President, Wole Adedoyin, Professor Osundare was hailed as a prolific writer, boasting an impressive repertoire of literary creations. With 18 books of poetry, two collections of selected poems, and a wealth of essays, monographs, and articles to his credit, Professor Osundare's literary prowess knows no bounds. His works have graced the pages of over 70 esteemed journals and magazines globally, serving as a testament to his remarkable ability to articulate across diverse mediums.

Professor Osundare's educational background is as diverse as his literary pursuits. He holds a Bachelor's degree with Honours from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, a Master's degree from the University of Leeds, England, and a Ph.D. from York University in Toronto, Canada. This rich exposure has undoubtedly influenced his unique perspective and creative voice.

Specializing in African Literature, Literature of the African Diaspora, and other related fields, Professor Osundare is a highly respected academic. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Prize, the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (won twice!), the Noma Award (Africa's most distinguished book prize), and the Fonlon/Nichols Award for Human Rights contributions. In 2014, he received the esteemed Nigerian National Merit Award, the nation's highest honor for academic and creative excellence.

IWA Celebrates Pius Adesanmi's 52nd Posthumous Birthday

 IWA CELEBRATES PIUS ADESANMI'S 52ND POSTHUMOUS BIRTHDAY



The International Writers Association (IWA) has commemorated the 52nd posthumous birthday of the late Professor Pius Adesanmi, a renowned Nigerian author and literary icon.


In a press statement issued by the Acting President of the Association, Wole Adedoyin, the IWA paid tribute to Adesanmi's exceptional contributions to African literature and his unwavering commitment to Pan-Africanism.


Professor Adesanmi was a distinguished scholar whose expertise spanned francophone and anglophone African and Black Diasporic literatures, politics, and cultures. He served as the Director of the Institute of African Studies at Carleton University until his untimely passing in the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 crash on March 10, 2019.


Adesanmi's research extended to various fields, including postcolonial writing and social media, popular and street cultures in Africa, postcolonial and cultural theory, and third-world feminist discourses. He was a strong advocate for public intellectualism and envisioned a promising future for Pan-Africa.


His literary journey commenced with the publication of his debut poetry collection, "The Wayfarer and Other Poems," in 2001, which was awarded the Association of Nigerian Authors prize for poetry. In 2010, his book "You're Not a Country, Africa" earned him the prestigious Penguin Prize for African Literature. This remarkable collection of essays delved into his personal understanding of Africa and explored the complexities of the continent.


Adesanmi's subsequent book, "Naija No Dey Carry Last: Thoughts on a Nation in Progress," a collection of essays focusing on Nigerian politics and culture, received critical acclaim and was selected by Channels Television Book Club as one of the 15 best Nigerian books of 2015.


The IWA, in its statement, highlighted Adesanmi's legacy as an inspirational figure who used his literary prowess to challenge the status quo, promote social justice, and advocate for a more unified Africa. IWA Advocates for Mother Language Integration in Education and Society

Wole Adedoyin, the Acting President of the International Writers Association (IWA), has issued a fervent call to parents and schools worldwide, urging them to prioritize the use and preservation of mother languages within the familial and educational spheres. Adedoyin's plea comes on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, celebrated annually on February 21st, and is underscored by the imperative need to safeguard linguistic diversity.

In a press statement released today from Ilesa, Adedoyin emphasized the pivotal role of parents and educators in nurturing linguistic heritage by actively engaging children in the consistent practice of their mother tongue. IWA Mourns the Passing of Renowned Folklorist Jimi Solanke

The International Writers Association is deeply saddened by the loss of the beloved folklorist, Jimi Solanke, who passed away in the early hours of Monday, February 5, after a brief illness. Solanke, affectionately known as 'Uncle Jimi', departed while en route to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital. His passing marks the end of an era for Nigeria's cultural landscape.

In a heartfelt statement issued by the Acting President of the International Writers Association, Wole Adedoyin, Jimi Solanke was celebrated as a multifaceted artist whose talents spanned songwriting, acting, performance, visual art, poetry, and storytelling. His distinctive style, characterized by a resonant, golden voice accompanied by guitar melodies, captivated audiences of all ages across generations.

Uncle Jimi's presence was ubiquitous in major stage productions both in Nigeria and internationally. His contributions to iconic plays such as "Death and the King’s Horseman," "Kurunmi," "Chattering and the Song," and "Kongi’s Harvest" solidified his status as a legendary figure in the theatrical realm. Moreover, his appearances on Nigerian television, spanning six decades, cemented his place in the hearts of millions.

Born on July 4, 1942, in Lagos, Jimi Solanke was nurtured by luminaries such as Wole Soyinka, Ola Rotimi, Akin Euba, Peggy Harper, Dapo Adelugba, and Demas Nwoko. As one of the inaugural graduates of The School of Drama at the University of Ibadan, later evolving into the Department of Theatre Arts, Solanke's impact on African arts education is immeasurable. His tenure at the Department of Dramatic Arts at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) further solidified his legacy.

According to the release, Solanke's artistic repertoire extended beyond the stage, encompassing musical compositions like "Onile Gogoro," "Eje ka jo," "Jenrokan," and "Na today you come." His collaboration with Ralph MacDonald on "The Path," recorded in New York in 1977, showcased his versatility and global reach. Additionally, Solanke served as a consultant for esteemed organizations such as UNICEF, UNFPA, and contributed significantly to Theatre for Development initiatives.
