IWA CELEBRATES PROFESSOR NIYI OSUNDARE AT 77
The International Writers Association (IWA) has congratulated renowned Nigerian scholar, poet, and playwright, Professor Niyi Osundare on the occasion of his 77th birthday.
In a statement released by the Association's Acting President, Wole Adedoyin, Professor Osundare was hailed as a prolific writer, boasting an impressive repertoire of literary creations. With 18 books of poetry, two collections of selected poems, and a wealth of essays, monographs, and articles to his credit, Professor Osundare's literary prowess knows no bounds. His works have graced the pages of over 70 esteemed journals and magazines globally, serving as a testament to his remarkable ability to articulate across diverse mediums.
Professor Osundare's educational background is as diverse as his literary pursuits. He holds a Bachelor's degree with Honours from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, a Master's degree from the University of Leeds, England, and a Ph.D. from York University in Toronto, Canada. This rich exposure has undoubtedly influenced his unique perspective and creative voice.
Specializing in African Literature, Literature of the African Diaspora, and other related fields, Professor Osundare is a highly respected academic. His dedication to teaching is well recognized, with his belief in fostering a collaborative learning environment where students and instructors engage in intellectual exchange.
Professor Osundare's literary achievements are equally impressive. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Prize, the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (won twice!), the Noma Award (Africa's most distinguished book prize), and the Fonlon/Nichols Award for Human Rights contributions. In 2014, he received the esteemed Nigerian National Merit Award, the nation's highest honor for academic and creative excellence.
